Abstract

This study analyses the spatial distribution of characidiin fishes Characidium lauroi and Characidium alipioi (Crenuchidae) in a forest stream system located in southeastern Brazil. Fish were sampled from July 2001 to April 2002. Collections were made with an electro-fishing device in five stream reaches of the Ribeirão Grande system. Conductivity, pH, water temperature and dissolved oxygen were measured at each site. The species have different distributions in Ribeirão Grande system. Characidium lauroi is abundant in montane-piedmont zones and Characidium alipioi occurs mainly in piedmont-plain zones. Streams’ different features contribute to these species’ distribution in the system

Francisco Manoel de Souza Braga, Unesp Rio Claro
Possui graduação em História Natural pela Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras de Rio Claro (Instituto Isolado) (1973), mestrado em Oceanografia (Oceanografia Biológica) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1978) e doutorado em Oceanografia (Oceanografia Biológica) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1982). Em 1995 prestou concurso para professor livre-docente, tornando-se professor adjunto e em 2005 tornou-se professor titular por concurso pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho. Tem experiência em biologia pesqueira de peixes marinhos e continentais e atualmente tem trabalhado em biologia populacional e ecologia de peixes de riachos.
