Abstract

Facing the population as it grows old, the Alzheimer's disease (AD) appears as a problem of great impact to the family of the patient, overloading the relative caregiver. The purpose of this study was to understand the difficulties and necessities of the caregiver member of the family. A qualitative approach was accomplished to interview four members (relatives) of different families. The information analyzed through the Thematic Analysis revealed five categories: - I don't know what is happening yet that identified ignorance about the Alzheimer's disease (AD); -Taking over responsibility for everything that identified daily routine elements which represent an overburden of demands towards the relative caregiver; -Where are the others? That identified sharing the obligations with other people to be very difficult; -The spirituality help that identified the need for support brought by faith; -The valorous hero that identified the caregiver necessity to be recognized and valorized. The study showed the real daily life faced by the family of elder patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Adriana Remião Luzardo, UFRGS

Possui graduação e licenciatura em Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2002) e Mestrado em Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2005). Atuou como docente do Centro Universitário Metodista em Porto Alegre. Tem atuado na área da Saúde Coletiva, com experiência em Enfermagem do Adulto, com ênfase em Gerontologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: idoso e doença de Alzheimer, aspectos multidimensionais do envelhecimento, sobrecarga do cuidador familiar, educação e saúde, cronobiologia, ensino e pesquisa em enfermagem Currículo Lattes
