Abstract
The portrayal of illiteracy: some considerations on education in Brazil. The aim of this study is to make some considerations on the present Brazilian situation regarding literacy and illiteracy. Three different methodological procedures were used: a conceptual revision of the literature; the historical process of illiteracy in Brazil and statistical data on the subject. In relation to the bibliographical studies, the terms literacy, illiteracy, reading and decoding of texts are presented coupled to writing skills. There is no intention of building a new proposal to overcome the problem of illiteracy. Therefore the historical background of illiteracy and statistical data show the historical situation of a diehard educational condition as actually occurs in developing countries, Brazil included.Downloads
