Abstract

The understanding of the structure of a scientific revolution presupposes an analysis of the conceptual change supervening to the process of theory change. There are several cases of language alteration discussed by Kuhn in his work about revolutions in science. This article discusses some of these cases when related to the history of chemistry and suggests a meaningful rapprochement between Kuhn and Duhem’s conceptions with respect to the historian’s craft when studying obsolete theories. It suggests yet that the attention to conceptual change in the evaluation of the past is a crucial mark to determine the new historiography of science, as recognized by Kuhn.
