French historiography of the 18th and 19th centuries: enlightenment and Romantic visions of the Middle Ages
Abstract
The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the historical analyses of the past changes according to contemporary issues. The different ways in which 18th century and 19th century authors viewed respectively the feudal system are taken as parameters of the present analysis. Even though presenting opposite conceptions both analyses have their raison d’être and are historically valid, besides allowing a better understanding of the period in which they were written.Downloads
