Abstract
This article presents a critic purpose about labor and spare time in contemporary capitalism. For this, a theoretical discussion about the literature related to this theme is presented. We discuss the general approach about work in contemporary society and, within this, the role of spare time. In addition, the article shows the results of an empirical research, involving teachers and employees of Santa Catarina Federal University that supports a pessimist view of the ‘world of labor’. The conclusion points out that there is, on the part of workers, a widespread dissatisfaction regarding their jobs; and that spare time, when it exists, is used for consumption or additional work. In other words, spare time is a time to reproduce the social relationships of capitalist society.Downloads
