Self-organization as an agent of the creative process and laboratory of musical meaning

Keywords: creative process; self-organization; musical composition.

Abstract

The article presents a reflection on my academic practice working in the dialogue between music and science, which is described here as a fruitful field for creativity and self-organization. Starting upon Boden’s notions of creativity (Boden, 2009; 2004; Boden & Theobald, 1999) and Gibson's (1966) Ecological Perception theory, the text discusses the creative process in the interaction with the subject, whether as author or spectator. The discussion presented here is anchored in a viewpoint where creativity is seen inserted in a force field that acts on the subject. Subjects, to a greater or lesser degree, are sensitized and develop the ability to understand their dialogue with this force field which they often initiate, but do not fully conducting. The article is also built step by step with descriptions of compositions, in which I explored several of the theoretical issues discussed here.
