Goethe's 'Swabian Country Priest' and American Founding Father John Adams
Abstract
The essay in its original German version was published in 2023 in Lützeler-Festschrift (Intercultural Dialogues. Exile and Contemporary Literature, Europe and Art Discourses. Festschrift for Paul Michael Lützeler on his 80th birthday, Tübingen: Stauffenberg, pp. 477–93). Lützeler is one of the most renowned German-American Germanists and teaches at Washington University in St. Louis. Some key points of this essay are listed here: the role of the Old Testament for Goethe and John Adams (2nd President of the USA); Judaism and ancient Jewish history; function and transmission of the 10 Commandments (ritual laws or universal code); genetic relationship between Judaism and Christianity (‘propagation hypothesis’); first intercultural contacts between Germany (the young Goethe) and John Adams; correspondence between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson; religiosity of the ‘Founding Fathers’; translation problems; The role of the German language in the early days of the United States. Although there is already a scientific dissertation on each line of Goethe's work, the Goethe-Adams theme has not yet been addressed in the literature on Goethe or has simply been ignored (the only exception: the commemorative edition of Artemis publishes in the 4th volume, from 1953, a brief excerpt from a letter by Adams, without further analysis). The essay now translated into Portuguese is therefore quite innovative, as it fills a gap in research and illustrates, with a small but not insignificant example, German-American cultural contacts based on biblical exegesis.
