Abstract

This article deals with the central aspects of the questionings by Euclides da Cunha about the impasses, the difficulties and the possibilities of social change in Brazil. His reflections about the Brazilian politics in the 19^th century will be considered the basis for this analysis. Taking the conflict as a starting point for all political action, the author of “Os Sertões” (The Backwoods) delineated the movements of several agents and social groups in the process of construction of balances between the preponderant social forces.

possui graduação em pela Universidade Estadual de Londrina (1985), mestrado em Ciências Sociais pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (1991) e doutorado em Sociologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1996). Atualmente é professor associado da Universidade Estadual de Londrina. Tem experiência na área de Sociologia, com ênfase em Sociologia Brasileira, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: democracia, mudança social, desigualdade, cultura e estado Currículo Lattes
