Abstract

This paper aimed to analyze the speech rate of 16 healthy elderly, aging 50 to 65, from the Southeast of Brazil. Data was collected from semi spontaneous discourse of ALIB database. The Transcriber program was used to analyze speech rate (min/word). The results showed there is a speed variation between subjects from different areas. Elderly from Belo Horizonte demonstrated higher speed in the Southeast, whereas elderly from Rio de Janeiro showed the lowest rate in the same region. It was concluded that the decrease in speech rate in the literature may not be a result of aging process and it might be related with sociocultural aspects.
