<b>Focusing the essay
Abstract
Current article analyzes the essay genre from its very beginning in the 16th century by Montaigne to its development throughout the following centuries. Discussions on the text of the essay and its features are foregrounded on studies by Lima, Prado Coelho and Adorno. The unstable, subjective and fragmented traits of the essay are underscored since they provide the genre with relevance and critical importance.
