In lands of amazonian natives, not all that glitters is gold: seduction (utopia) and manipulation (dystopia)

Keywords: primitive; foreigner; manipulation; resistance.

Abstract

We present the fictional universe of Fernando Canto, from Amapá, as a way of highlighting and expanding, in a crossed (hybrid) perspective, political conceptions between utopia and dystopia. For this, in a historical conception, we problematize in the short story O bálsamo (1995) the representation of the native and the colonizer, in the lands of the men with one eye; welcomed as the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Establishing a parameter between seduction, manipulation and resistance, the article is divided into three moments. In the first one, a dialectic between utopian and dystopian thought is punctuated, and then placed within narrative fiction. In the second, the poetic elements of balm and silk are explored - embraced as devices of seduction/manipulation, which opens up the possibility of exploring the categories of power, oppression and control. At the last moment, the category of bare life is brought closer to the process of involution of the natives, and then it is announced that, in those lands of Amazonian natives, saying no brought about a resistance against the narrative/anti-democracy of the strange silk dresses. The theoretical dialogue is constituted, above all, from the thought of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben and Teixeira Coelho.
