The accessibility of relative clauses in early children's writing
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze relative clauses in the writing of literacy learners based on accessibility constraints. Keenan and Comrie (1977) predict morphosyntactic constraints for relativization based on a hierarchy of grammatical relations; however, we project a new perspective on this issue, which, in addition to not only considering motivations of a morphosyntactic nature, mainly involve others of a pragmatic, semantic and cognitive nature, as proposed by Dik (1997) and O'Grady (2011). The fundamental hypothesis of the work is that, unlike Keenan and Comrie's (1977) proposal, there is not a prominence of the subject grammatical relation in relativization, but the interference of a scale of topicality and animacy and a scale of distance between the gap and the filling material in the relative clause, which has a cognitive and referential nature.
