The ANALYSIS OF THE RISK OF FALLS IN ELDERLY SUBMITTED TO EVALUATION OF MOBILITY, BALANCE AND GAP

Keywords: Geriatric assessmen, aging, mobility limitation

Abstract

The aging process contributes to functional decline and consequently generates changes in balance and gait. The analysis of balance and gait contributes to verifying the profile and risk situations for falls in the elderly, an event that is considered a public health problem. This study aimed to correlate mobility, balance and gait with the risk of falls in the elderly. This is a cross-sectional study, carried out with the elderly who attend the physiotherapy school clinic of the Ingá University Center - UNINGÁ, in the area of elderly health. The study had as inclusion criteria, elderly people aged over 60 years and who accepted to participate in the research by filling out the free and informed consent form. Patients who did not walk without the help of another person and those who had no cognitive impairment to understand the questionnaires were excluded. The Functional Kinetic Vulnerability Index (IVCF-20) was used to assess functional vulnerability and the Tinetti scale for gait and balance analysis. The findings presented in the IVCF-20 index and in the Tinetti scale reveal a greater risk of falls in elderly and older women, as they have greater functional deficit and mobility and balance restrictions. In view of the results of the present study, prevention is carried out with the aim of reducing successive complementary problems to falls and assuring the elderly person a senility process with a better quality of life.
