AROMATHERAPY IN THE CARE OF ANXIOUS SYMPTOMS

Keywords: Anxiety; Aromatherapy; Complementary Therapies

Abstract

Anxiety is an adaptive state of tension and vigilance in the face of anticipating a threat, which is considered a disorder when it manifests excessively or persists beyond appropriate periods. In 2018, aromatherapy was included in the National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPIC) and began to be used as an auxiliary method in the treatment of mild anxiety or cases with greater functional impairment. This research aimed to gather clinical studies on the effectiveness of aromatherapy in the treatment of anxiety symptoms. A systematic review of the literature was carried out using articles published from 2013 to 2023 indexed in the Regional Portal of the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and the Medical Publisher platform (PUBMED). As a result, a reduction in the subjective perception of anxiety symptoms, physiological parameters of autonomic nervous system activation and endocrinological stress markers was demonstrated in people subjected to adverse situations or in their common daily activities. It is concluded that this therapy presents itself as a potential practice in the treatment of mild anxiety conditions, as well as an adjuvant in severe anxiety conditions, however, that it needs further studies to delimit its benefits and potential risks in the short and long term, which is the concentration and the best method of application, thus obtaining greater scientific evidence of its efficacy and safety.
