CAREER ANCHORS AND VOCATIONAL LIFE STAGES OF YOUNG FORMER AND IN ACTIVE DUTY TEMPORARY SERVICEPEOPLE OF THE BRAZILIAN ARMY
Abstract
Through the various stages in life, individuals are obliged to make decisions not only about their personal lives but also about their professional lives. Concerning the latest, it is known that the labor market is extremely competitive, reaching enormous unemployment rates, which makes decision-making even more important especially when it comes to professions and careers to be pursued. In the face of that, this research had the objective of correlating the former and on duty servicepeople professional preferences with their current vocational life stages. Thus, 224 young temporary servicemen from a military organization of the Brazilian Army and seven former temporary servicemen who are already active in the labor market have taken the career anchor test. The results indicated that Security/Stability (SE, acronym in Portuguese) and Lifestyle (EV, acronym in Portuguese) anchors were preferred for both populations. It can be inferred that young adults preference over the SE anchor is related to the employability difficulty in the civilian labor market and to the fact that these people are constantly in touch with public workers, i.e., individuals who are stable and secure in their Armed Forces careers. It was noticed that those who are in the vocational life stage called exploration prefer the SE anchor and those in the establishment stage prefer the EV anchor.
