Abstract

Understanding the trajectory and consolidation of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) is relevant for positioning researchers in the field and for understanding origins and social and historical motivations for its formation. This undertaking is presented in this theoretical review, which aims to present the origin and trajectory of CCT, which goes through the formation of consumer culture and ends with the construction of knowledge, identity and limits of action of CCT over time. Over approximately 30 years of existence this perspective has as its landmarks the works of Holbrook and Hirschman (1982) and Arnould and Thompson (2005), in addition to the Consumer Odyssey Project. In the Brazilian scenario, the formation of research groups, such as CCB, represents an expansion of the CCT performance, as well as a coordination and cooperation work with what is produced abroad. This discussion reinforces the diversity of CCT, motivates more studies in the area and contributes to the consolidation and legitimization of the field.
