Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to describe the meaning of group therapy for mothers of autistic children and to identify the importance they attribute to the group in the socialization of the child. It was carried out with eight mothers of autistic children who attend the Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais, in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, during the period from July to November 2008. Data collection took place through semi-structured interview. Data analysis was based on content analysis, which revealed three themes: Benefits of group therapy for autistic children; Family participation in group therapy; and Therapies associated with the group. The results showed that for those mothers, the child's participation in group therapy means the possibility to obtain benefits in their social life, psychomotor and behavioral development, and provides parents a greater involvement in their care and thus to obtain knowledge about this disorder. In addition, we highlight the need of interdisciplinary vision and action in these children care. Thus, group therapy, for these mothers, is an important strategy in autistic children health care.
