<b>Amputation below diabetic patients of inferior members: analysis of the costs of hospitalization in public hospital</b> - doi: 10.4025/cienccuidsaude.v9i1.10536

Abstract

This is a descriptive study about the cost of hospitalization of patients with diabetes mellitus who suffered amputation of limbs with to a public university hospital. The information was obtained through secondary data which were tabulated in Excel 2003. We analyzed 21 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), 57.14% were female, mean age was 66 years, with prevalence of type 2 DM diagnosed between 5 to 25 years ago. The mean hospital stay was 14 days and leg amputation was the most frequent procedure (10). The total cost of hospitalizations resulting from the sum of daily costs, surgical procedures, laboratorial tests, medications and hospital medical materials were R$ 99,455.74, with average cost per patient of $ 4735.99. This cost is high and shows how important it is to adopt the prevention actions through appropriate governmental and institutional actions that emphasize a preventive diagnosis and a more efficient diabetes control system.
