Abstract

The study had the purpose of knowing the maternal experience on the delivery in which their children suffered serious perinatal asphyxia. This is a descriptive-exploratory research, in a qualitative approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interview with six women/mothers of children who had undergone serious perinatal asphyxia at the moment of delivery, in the city of Rio Grande, from 2005 to 2007. Data analysis showed the difficulties experienced by these women/mothers with the rupture between the idealized delivery and the one that occurred, as well as the fear and longing created by the separation of the dyad mother/newborn. Besides that, it was possible to see the lack of harmony and consonance in the behavior of health professionals when facing this complex situation. It is highlighted, therefore, the necessity of reviewing the assistance given to the woman who is giving birth, mainly when she experiences intercurrences at the moment of delivery, which makes impossible the fulfillment of the first contact with the newborn.
