Hypertension from the perspective of its carriers - doi: 10.4025/cienccuidsaude.v10i3.10845
Abstract
This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in a Family Health Unit of a municipality in the metropolitan area of Curitiba. Twelve patients with hypertension took part in the process along with the Hypertension and Diabetes Program. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of patients with hypertension related to their disease. The data collection occurred from October to November 2009, during the focus group technique applied. It has been verified that the subjects perceive hypertension through signs and symptoms physically manifested or through complications. Even though the disease is controlled by drug treatment associated to a non-drug treatment, it has been reported a difficulty in managing it. In order to deal with the disease, patients establish a support network. The family, neighbors and health services are part of it during this process. It is believed that this study will contribute with the professional nurses rethinking of caring actions and with new attitudes to be taken considering the experienced needs.
