Abstract
A descriptive study, with qualitative approach with the aim of identifying the social support received by teenager mothers while caring for their children. Data was collected from February to April 2007, carried out with six teenager mothers, through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Interviews were conducted in the participants’ home in four different times – one week, one month, four months, and six months after delivery. Results revealed that the family, represented mainly by the mother of a teenager, is the source of important support both during pregnancy and post-delivery periods. The support offered by the family was instrumental and emotional. While facing some issues with the children, some teenager mothers looked for professional help, although most preferred their mother´s or mother-in-law´s assistance, given their previous personal experience in dealing with children. In this study, family played an important role as social support helping the teenagers assume their role as mothers. As health professionals we should also approach the family, identifying them as care recipient as well as main role model for this teenager.Downloads
