Relatives in the waiting room of the surgical center: feelings and perceptions

Abstract

The period during surgery brings many different feelings for the relatives that are waiting, because it involves a very intensity emotional load. This study had the purpose to know the feelings and perceptions of relatives when confronted with surgical process of a family member while in the waiting room. This research used qualitative approach, with seventeen open interviews, at the Hospital Universitário in Minas Gerais, between 04 and 29 of November 2010. From the comprehensive analysis the following units emerged: Anxiety, Tight heart feeling and Suffering; and Lack of information and explanation about the experienced situation. It showed the necessity of taking care of relatives using an empathic way, meeting their needs, promoting comfort during their waiting time, as well as clarifying their doubts perceived through the their expressions of fear and concern.
