Abstract
Nowadays, with the need to increase the family income, it has become more common to leave children and adolescents in support institutions, where they receive specialized attention and keep away from the urban dangers. The present study is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, which aimed to describe the perception of a family regarding the assistance rendered to children and adolescents in an institution of support, an assistance project of the Brazil Bank, called AABB Community, in the south of Brazil. A semi-structured interview was carried out with 28 parents/responsible for children and adolescents that frequented the institution between 2008 and 2009. Data was subjected to the thematic content analysis. Results showed an improvement in the family coexistence and in the relationship with other family members, and also an improvement in the school performance. It is concluded that is necessary to strengthen the ties between institutions and family, having as mediator the professional nurse from Family Health. New studies are recommended in order to give new meaning to the space that these institutions are occupying in the care given to children and adolescents and include them in the health strategies directed to these individuals.Downloads
