Abstract
This descriptive-exploratory research looks to identify the characteristics of the alumnae of the specialization course in Obstetrics Nursing at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, their motives for enrolling, their places of work, and the activities they have developed in obstetrics. The study utilizing a self-responsive questionnaire to collect the data, gathered in 2006. Applying descriptive analysis, the differences in performance in obstetrics were calculating, using the chi-squared test or Fisher’s exact test of independence. The results show that of the 54 students, 40.7% had worked in obstetrics prior to enrolling, and 94.4% listed their professional development as the principle motive for their enrollment. Comparing with the performance in the year they concluded the course with 2006, there was a statistically significant increase among the students who had not worked with obstetrics (11,1% versus 25,9%; p=0.047), while there was no difference in relation to the obstetrics center (46,3% versus 38,9%; p=0.436). We conclude that the specialization in obstetrics do not guarantee the permanence of these students in the field of obstetrics; which calls for the need to investigate more completely this characteristic, in the search for greater comprehension for its justification.Downloads
