Abstract
This exploratory and cross-sectional study aimed to describe the subcutaneous insulin administration process in diabetes patients hospitalized at an institution in the interior of São Paulo State, in 2004. We interviewed 41 nursing professionals, i.e. 12 technicians and 29 auxiliaries, who were responsible for insulin preparation and subcutaneous application. One of the researchers collected data by observing the subcutaneous insulin administration process. Predominant data showed that human insulin was used type NPH, 45% in the interval between 30 and 35 UI, and that 80.5% was applied in the morning. We highlight that: with respect to medical prescription, 53.6% were not signed by the physicians and 84.6% were readable. Most professionals performed insulin application procedures correctly; 63.4% selected the recommended site, 61% made the subcutaneous fold at an angle of 90º. However, there were mistakes in the procedures; 85.4% did not consider the last application site, 97.6% did not register the application site. Results indicated that some of the medication process’ characteristics can lead to medication errors. Thus, we emphasize the need to look for effective strategies regarding education to provide updated medication administration to the nursing team.Downloads
