Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the elderly hospitalization and mortality in the municipality of Maringá-PR. The death certificates were obtained from the SIM/MS, the hospital admissions from the SIH-SUS, and the population data estimates from the NEPO/UNICAMP. Rates were analyzed by sex, age, underlined cause of death and main diagnoses of hospitalization. Circulatory system, neoplasia and respiratory diseases were the cause of 73% of the deaths. Diseases of the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems were responsible for 72.1% of hospitalization. The hospitalization rates were higher than mortality rates, except for neoplasia; higher for men except for external causes (5.2 for men and 7.4/1000 inhabitants for women) and endocrine diseases (3.1 for men and 5.1/1000 inhabitants for women). Nervous (11.3), genitourinary (11.1) and external causes (4.2) had higher rates hospitalization/death. Mortality and morbidity studies may generate causal hypotheses and can serve as an instrument to implement health and social policies.Downloads
