Neonatal mortality of Maringá–Paraná residents

Abstract
The objective of this paper was characterizing neonatal mortality of Maringá residents, in 1990. Rhe research material was made up of 87 death certificates. The data was collected death certificates, hospital archives, home interviews, health center files and a necropsy records. Neonatal mortality rates were 19,4 per 1,000 live births. Most of the deaths occurred in the first week of live (92,0%), with less than 37 weeks of gestation newborns (79,8%), low birth weight infants (74,1%), male newborns (56,3%), and cesarean section newborns (54,2%). The basic causes of death were codified in accordance with the “International Diseases Classification” – 9th revision. Perinatal affections caused 83,2% of the deaths, of which prematurity was considered the main cause, (15,8%).Downloads
