Abstract

This study provides re-compilation of a Master's degree dissertation that sketched the epidemiological profile of youth (10 to 24 years old) mortality in Maringá, Paraná, from 1979 to 1998. To know its magnitude and tendencies, the proportional mortality and its coefficients were worked into the variables: age, sex, marital status, degree of schooling, occupation, place and basic cause of death. Secondary data extracted from the SIM/MS (Information System about Mortality of Health Ministry) was used; and for the sample population, the special tabulation from the NEPO/UNICAMP (State University of Campinas' Population Study Nucleus). The mortality of these young people showed a similar profile to the Brazilian one, being the most drastically hit the young adults (from 20 to 24 years old), males (around 70%), due to external causes.
