Abstract
Since nurses are constantly in touch with patients, it is essential they assume an educational role towards the oncology patient, providing applicable information related to the drug treatment. The present study had the purpose to verify and evaluate the knowledge that oncology patients have about the chemotherapeutic medications to which they are subject. The study sample consisted of 29 patients from the Center of High Complexity Oncology (Centro de Alta Complexidade em Oncologia - CACON) of a hospital from a city in the interior of Minas Gerais State. Results show that only one (3.5%) patient referred the names of the medications. As for the effects expected, 12 (44.8%) of the interviewees claimed “Cure cancer”, and seven (24.1%) stated “Improve the problem”. Regarding the dosage, 27 (93.1%) of the interviewees did not know it. By providing necessary information in a clear and understandable way to the patients, family, and caretakers, the nursing team would contribute with drug therapy effectiveness and avoid treatment abandoning.Downloads
