Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a group of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and visceral obesity. This syndrome is associated with an increase in the risk of a cardiovascular event and high mortality index. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the physical activity on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in hypertensive women assisted at a Basic Health Care Unit in the city of Maringá, state of Paraná. Fifty-six female patients older than 45 were selected. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by using the guideline of the I Diretriz Brasileira de Diagnóstico e Tratamento de Síndrome Metabólica. Data showed a prevalence of 59% of metabolic syndrome in the patients studied, out of which 24 (43%) were sedentary and only 9 (16%) were physically active. Risk factors for metabolic syndrome were observed in sedentary patients. Results showed that weight, hypertension and dyslipidemic control may contribute to treatment of metabolic syndrome, mainly through regular physical activity programs.Downloads
