Perception of public school teachers on the mental health of adolescent students

Keywords: Mental Health, Adolescent, School Health Promotion

Abstract

Objectives: Psychological distress among adolescents has increased and strategies to promote mental health can be developed at school. Has the goal to describe the emotional demands of schoolchildren perceived by teachers and leaders; to analyze the support provided in the school and highlight the need for training. Methods: Exploratory descriptive research with 23 teachers and 3 leaders. Results: The data were grouped into two axes: a) the leaders’ view on the need to promote the mental health of the school; b) teachers’ perception of adolescent mental health. Conclusions: There is increasing emotional distress among schoolchildren, but the actions to deal with them at school are insufficient, requiring training and partnership with the health service.
