Abstract
This descriptive, observational and prospective study, aimed to identify the occurrence of postpartum depression on mothers of a University Hospital and compare mothers with postpartum depression indicative to those without, according to the sociodemographic and obstetric variables. Participated in the study 35 women, interviewed in the Hospital and later at home, 30 to 45 days after birth, when the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was applied. The data were analyzed using simple frequency and chi-square test (p<0.05). Most women had family income between 1|-|3 minimum wage (60%); elementary school education (37.1%); aged between 19|-|35 years (51.4%) and married/lived with partner (71.4%). The occurrence of postpartum depression was 34.3%. The variables: number of children, parity and support from family and/or friends were associated with the occurrence of postpartum depression. The postpartum depression can be considered a serious public health problem and, because of that, its inclusion must be considered in all health services that provide care to pregnant women and mothers, allowing early detection and treatment.Downloads
