Abstract

Nursing acts towards satisfying population health needs, seeking health condition and life quality improvement. The aim of this article was to describe the profile of nurses who develop their activities in Family Health Strategy in six counties in southern Rio Grande do Sul state. It is a cross sectional piece of research. Data collection occurred between November 2008 and January 2009 through structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was carried out by checking the distribution of cases in each variable. Among the interviewees, 95,8 were female, 45,8% were based in Pelotas, and 28% had been working in Family Health Strategy for less than a year. Among the activities referred to by the nursing professionals, assistential and bureaucratic ones, along with nursing supervision, were the most relevant. Educational actions prevailed among most nurses (66,6%). The need of a workplace diagnosis by family health teams in order to plan health activities with participation of the local community, taking into account both the local reality and culture, thus enabling the health practices reorganization, is evident.
