Quality indicators as strategy for improving the quality of hospital care university

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the evolution of twelve indicators of quality of nursing care before and after the intervention measures and continuous education in medical surgical internment and intensive care units at a public university hospital in Paraná, in the period of March and August 2008. This study was descriptive, exploratory, retrospective, of a quantitative approach done from the analysis of results obtained in the quality of nursing care, listed in the database service out from the database of the Advisory Service on Quality Control of nursing care of the studied hospital, which analyzes the percentage of matching each indicator in relation to the Ideal Index of Compliance - IID, which was adopted as standard. Results showed an improvement of results in the following units: Neonatal Intermediate Care 97%, Burn Treatment Center 94%, Pediatric Intensive Care 93%, Unit Men 90%, Maternity 87%, Neonatal Intensive Care and Tisiology 80%, Pediatrics 77% and Infectious-Contagious Illness 70%. But investments in strategies of constant and continuing education are still necessary in the sense of awareness and engage professionals in the provision of nursing care with the best possible quality and thus achieve the ideal IID.
