Abstract

This is an exploratory and descriptive study, developed from thematic semi-structured interviews, with women who had breastfed for at least four months and were linked to Medical Care Center II (PAM II) in the city of Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo State. This study aimed to identify the moment and reasons that led women to use regional lactogogues as support to breastfeeding; identify the kind of lactogogues used; and identify the fundamentals of common sense on which this use was based. After transcribing and analyzing the interviews, three thematic units arose: lactogogues, experience and support. The subjects identified the lactogogues, used them and reaffirmed their value. To have experienced breastfeeding was extremely important to the subjects. Family and social values were crucial as support; and they also appreciated the orientations given, describing good feelings and sensations during the act.
