Abstract
This research had as a goal to examine the social representations on the nursing work, elaborated by the Brasilia society. The people interviewed in this research were in the number of 150 persons, having different educational levels (elementary school, high school and college), varying from 21 to over 50 years of age, male and female, living in Brasilia and in the satellite cities. Free association forms were used, with the inducing phrase “The Nursing job is...”. The results show that the social representations of the nursing work are organized around care and help to the physician’s work. For the Brasilia society (“brasilienses”), being a nurse and doing the tasks associated to this profession are both linked to the feminine gender - mainly to the maternal traits -, what contributes to subordinate, to underestimate and to discriminate the nursing professionals, being them women or men.Downloads
