Abstract

Since the 1980´s, the external causes of morbimortality appeared as a relevant problem of Public Health. DATASUS pointed out, in 2007, 831,165 occurrences in the Brazilian territory while the state of Rio Grande do Sul hosted 15.7% of these cases. In order to understand the several factors that influenced this problem and the local factors of this casuistry, this study has the objective of describing morbidity due to External Causes in an area of the municipality of Porto Alegre – RS from February 2002 to February 2005, corresponding to the demand from 14 Services of Basic Care. The analysis was based on 1,594 registrations of the demand of services from the database of the Observatory of External Causes located in the Region of Lomba do Pinheiro and Partenon. The domicile was the most registered occurrence site evidencing the precariousness of the physical environment and the fragility of the family relations. Home accidents, comprising 33.2% of the data, corresponded to most of the attendances, while the events deriving from violence totaled 20.3% of the registrations. The analysis of the data pointed out social, economic, generation and gender vulnerabilities, suggesting the need of structural and promotional measures of education and prevention.
