A vision of institutions and economic development from Acemoglu:
a critical analysis to the part of regional studies applied to Brazil

Abstract
The economic growth of regions depends on institutions and institutions, at the same time, are a measure of economic growth. The contribution intended by this article is to gather and propose an organization of ideas scattered on the theme “institutions and economic growth”, focusing on Daron Acemoglu and coauthors studies. Thus, the article seeks to compare its analysis with that of other institutionalist authors, and highlight academic relevance from a synthesis of studies in the Brazilian regional level that used their empirical methodology. Going to applications to Brazilian regions, states and municipalities, the article shows that the evolution of Brazilian regional inequalities has historical and, above all, institutional roots, and the analysis from theoretical elements such as de facto and de jure institutions, and the distinction between inclusive and extractive institutions, highlights the importance of Acemoglu and coauthors analysis for the understanding of fundamental aspects of Brazilian regional development.
