Durante el siglo XIX, con la consolidación de la república en Chile, se produjo un enfrentamiento de ideas entre los grupos laicistas, representantes del denominado estado docente y los grupos católicos, defensores de la libertad de enseñanza. Como consecuencia de las ideas de ambos grupos surgieron las dos más importantes universidades existentes hoy en el país: La Universidad de Chile y la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
