Scientific literacy and jury decisions

This study investigated lay jurors' understanding of anatomical terms in trials for intentional crimes against life in Salto do Lontra/PR, Brazil. The research, using a qualitative-quantitative approach, conducted a documentary analysis of 25 legal proceedings and applied questionnaires to 19 jurors, involving statistical and interpretive treatment. Results revealed inconsistencies between forensic reports and verdicts, a predominance of subjective justifications, and low familiarity with fundamental anatomical terms. Contrary to a supposed curricular gap, it was found that the "human body" theme is formally present in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). However, there is a mismatch between normative prescription and the effective appropriation of this knowledge, which compromises the scientific literacy required for the rationality of judicial decisions. It is concluded that strengthening meaningful learning experiences in Basic Education is essential for citizenship formation, aiming to reduce cognitive biases and strengthen participatory justice.
