Creative paraphrase as one characteristic of the competent reader in the university entrance examination (Vestibular) texts - DOI: 10.4025/actascihumansoc.v26i2.1371
Abstract
This research aims at investigating whether candidates for the entrance examination (Vestibular) of State University of Maringá (UEM) have been successful in the reading of the supporting text provided for the essay paper. It discusses whether essays may be classified as reproductive paraphrases or copies of the supporting text. Paraphrase reading is thus investigated to verify if it is one characteristic of the competent reader. Essays on waste of food in Brazil, written in the summer of 2002 entrance examinations, are analyzed. Texts produced in this context showed two types of readers: a) the reader who merely extracts ideas from the text, without any co-production of meaning; b) the reader who writes a paraphrase creatively and uses data from the text as a support for his/her arguments, interpreting and adding new meanings to the proposed theme. Results show that creative paraphrase is a characteristic of the competent readerDownloads
