Abstract

In this article emphasis is given to Celso Furtado’s discussion of the intellectuals’ role in the development of useful knowledge for propositional actions which would lead to a deeply re-defining social change of social and political exclusion conditions. Combating defeating, pessimistic and nationalist perspectives would be a task for the intellectuals who are committed to the reconstruction of the country in all spheres. Such combat should occur by means of an ample discernment on the underdevelopment bases, their causes and consequences in the establishment of a social organization pattern of excludable political domain. Intellectuals intervene in a favorable way towards a democratic redefinition of society as their reflections illuminate social and historical reality, leading to adequate perception of its problems, dilemmas and possibilities
