Sapphire eyes: introduction to the reading of O cão de Dürer, a Maria João Cantinho’s tale
Abstract
This rehearsal promotes a reading of the tale ‘O cão de Dürer’, of the Portuguese writer Maria João Cantinho, published in 2006, showing the correspondence with the Renaissance engraving Melencolia I, of Albrecht Dürer (1514), and other artist’s works. The protagonist’s understanding of the story about the art of Dürer takes place on a trip into himself in order to access his own memory. Therefore, it is here used the concept of ‘aesthetic memory’ of Mario Praz (1982) in search of the correspondence between Literature and Visual Arts. Because of the academic affinity of the author with the studies of Walter Benjamin’s work, several discussions of the German philosopher also appear as a reading instrument for the tale.
