18th-century manuscript from Vila Real de Sabará
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present, as an object of possible research lines, the text of the representation dated August 4, 1777, coming from the chamber of Vila Real de Sabará, Minas Gerais, in which the officers address directly to Queen Maria I, arguing that it was no longer possible to maintain the voluntary subsidy – a tribute instituted to help in the reconstruction of Lisbon, after the earthquake of 1755 – given the decay in which the village and captaincy had been. In order to mark the existence and provenance of the diplomatic document, edited under semi-diplomatic norms, studies on its codicological, paleographic and diplomatic properties precede the analysis of the text.
