Revista do Norte: a “Modern Adventure” in 1920s in Recife

Abstract

The objective of the study presented here is to review and revitalize the historiographic record of the modernist moment in Recife in the first decades of the 20th century, through the investigation of Revista do Norte, notably its editorial guidelines, its lines of aesthetic expressions, criticism and intellectual positions. The investigative study of Revista do Norte, a periodical that appeared in Recife in the 1920s, allows us to analyse the cultural expressions of that moment in the region, and provide indications of perspectives and interpretations that have not yet been glimpsed; in addition to enabling the recovery of authors, texts and other artistic and intellectual manifestations, which the magazine contains, and which are dimmed, or even diluted. As a hypothesis, we were led by the conviction that this periodical not only brings the compilation of important and decisive texts for the understanding of the aesthetic moment of the time, but also presents what a ‘school’ would be, which has not yet been presupposed in terms of refers to studies of literary and artistic manifestations at the beginning of the century in Recife. It is concluded that the multiplicity of approaches in this magazine, which did not exclude each other, but, on the contrary, added complexity to the guidelines and trends of the time, are representative of the profuse heterogeneity of expressions that marked the beginning of the century in this region, and that demand a more accurate and perspective review, including immersion in documents that have been postponed, with an imminent risk of being permanently dispersed.
