Althusser's hermeneutics of encounter: meaning making as encounter
Abstract
This article invests in the Althusserian materialism of the encounter as an explanatory model of signification, approaching it as a valid path for the production of metalinguistic knowledge. By making aleatory materialism a matter of linguistic epistemology, this article discusses Lacanian real of language, the arbitrariness of the sign, and the phenomenon of signification as philosophical exponents of the encounter. Based on a reading of Milner (2012) and Althusser (1994b, 2005), this article proposes expanding the circle of philosophers understood as materialists of the encounter. Based on a philosophical discussion of signification through encounter, it suggests the possibility that all structuralist linguistics and anthropology that embraced the arbitrariness of the sign as a guiding axiom may have endorsed the undercurrent of the materialism of the encounter, which Althusser posits.
