Perceptive – auditory identification of sonorants contrasts by children with and without phonological disorders: effect of subclass and severity level

Keywords: Perception; evaluation; phonological disorder; severity level; sonorants.

Abstract

Considering that literature presents differents results regarding the perceptual performance of children with and without phonological disorder (PD), the aim of this study was to compare the auditory -perceptual performance in the identification of sonorants in these children and to analyze whether there would be an effect of the subclasses (nasals, lateral and non-lateral liquids) and the severity level among children with PD. A total of 64 children participated, 42 with PD and 22 without, aged four to eight years, who completed the PERCEFAL identification test involving the sonorant class. The results showed no perceptual difference between the two groups of children. However, among children with PD, there was an effect of both severity level and subclass. Children with severe level showed a lower percentage of correct responses and longer reaction times (RT) compared to the others. Furthermore, for both groups, the RT of correct responses was shorter for lateral liquids than for nasals and non-lateral liquids. It is concluded that the observed auditory–perceptual deficit is associated with the severity of the phonological disorder (PD) rather than with merely belonging or not to the clinical group. The effect of the subclasses reinforces that the perceptual difficulty is not homogeneous, suggesting the existence of distinct perceptual similarities within the sonorants. Phonological class and severity level should be considered in the assessment and rehabilitation process of children with PD.
