The speaking-writing relation and the problem of the nature of writing acquisition
Abstract
This article aims to address the relation between speaking and writing and the problem of the nature of writing acquisition. This approach is guided by a semiological-enunciative perspective on becoming a writer, a perspective affiliated with Émile Benveniste’s theory of language, more precisely with his theories on semiology and enunciation. In methodological terms, this is a theoretical study that is an excerpt from a broader theoretical-analytical study, anchored in two corpora of children’s writing, constituted in naturalistic and longitudinal collection sessions, carried out in a domestic environment, over the course of two years and six months, with two children: a girl, accompanied before the literacy cycle, and a boy, accompanied during the literacy cycle. The results obtained support three principles: (1) the acquisition of writing imposes two major linguistic abstractions, a discursive abstraction and a systemic abstraction; (2) the acquisition of writing presupposes two types of linguistic conversions by the child, the discourse-system/system-discourse conversions and the speaking-writing/writing-speaking conversions; (3) the acquisition of writing is an act of establishing, in the language, the child as a writer and reader and, in the child, the language as a system of signs and written discourse that semiologically remodels this system.
