Gender-inclusive language in the Argentine university population
Abstract
. In the last decade, gender-inclusive language and, more specifically, non-binary forms, have been incorporated into the social, political, academic and media agenda of Argentina and the entire Spanish-speaking community. Despite the spread of gender-inclusive language, there is no univocal vision as to what forms it refers to: duplication (‘alumnos y alumnas’), neutralization (‘alumnado’), innovation (‘alumnes, alumnxs’), or all of them. For their part, universities have had a relevant role in the public discussion, since they have issued statements on the use of gender-inclusive language and have developed guidelines for its use in the university environment. In Argentina, in particular, national and provincial universities have expressed support for its use. However, in terms of research, there are not many studies about its use, the context, or users. In this paper, we present the results of a survey of 174 university students in Argentina (primarily from Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area) in which we inquired about the reported use of non-binary forms ([-e] and [-x]) and the incidence that different social variables –such as age, gender identity and university career– may have on their usage. We found that two thirds of the participants reported using non-binary forms, with more or less frequency, and that those who use them most often are young people, and women or people from the LGBTIQ+ community.
